Tips For Beginner Songwriters: How To Turn Your Thoughts Into Music Part 1

Have you ever wanted to express yourself through song?
Have you ever wanted to express yourself through song?

You just heard the most amazing song on the radio. Every single word resonated with you and was a clear reflection of how you've been feeling. If you've ever wondered if you could write your own song, I am here to tell you that you can!

First, Tap Into How You Feel

Set aside time for a quiet moment where you can be alone with yourself. Steady your breath, sit or stand comfortably in a relaxing environment, and try to clear your mind. What sensations come to your awareness? What is there beneath the noise, the to-do list, the subconscious thoughts? Hopefully, you find something special. Now- it's your choice if you want to express it through music.

What Do You Want To Say and How Do You Want To Say It?

The beauty of creating is that whatever you produce is completely yours. You are the director, producer, and actor. You get to decide what you present to others and how much. Do you want the song to reflect your feelings and thoughts? Do you want the song to be a commentary on something that inspires you, or something that upsets you? When writing the song, do you have a target audience, a certain population you really want to hear what you have to say? Keep these questions in mind before you start. They can help orient you and guide you through the writing process.

Who Are Your Influences?

Think of your favorite song and your favorite music artist. What about their lyrics stands out to you? What about their musical choices resonates with you? See how you can incorporate their vibe into your own original work. For example, one of my biggest musical influences is Imogen Heap. She wrote the iconic song "Hide and Seek" with the vocal clip, "Mmm Whatcha Say," that was popularized in the 2010s. Her music is intense, atmospheric, and her lyricism is filled with longing and vivid imagery. She makes me want to write music that makes people feel like they are entering a world that I have created for them: a little pocket of the universe that only exists in song. So, dig deep and find who inspires you the most.
